Gallery Night is a long-time Madison arts tradition— organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art—offering patrons an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of visual art offerings throughout the city. Galleries, artist studios, non-profit organizations, and other local businesses that showcase original artwork open their doors and host special exhibitions, demonstrations, and receptions during this semi-annual event.
Mark your calendar for October 6, as Madison celebrates 29 years of Gallery Night! Patrons are encouraged to tour Madison’s vibrant arts scene from 5-9 p.m. and then join the After Party in MMoCA’s lobby from 9-11 pm, for live music from DJ Boyfrrriend, refreshments, and hands-on art activities.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., Meg Mitchell will choreograph an interactive experience to initiate a new annual hops harvest event. With artist-made hops tokens and tally sticks, in addition to bushels of hand-picked hop cones, participants will explore 18th-century tools and processes used for on-the-job accounting and payment of hop-pickers. Linking the Hops Exchange and its harvest to the history of hops-related labor and material exchange, Mitchell addresses food as a commodity and explores the intersections of power and commerce.
