Rise Up and Sing! Featuring the Heritage Blues Orchestra and Ruthie Foster

  • Memorial Union
  • 800 Langdon St.

Raised in a small town in Texas and exposed to gospel music at an early age, Ruthie Foster first learned to sing during worship services. Her sound has grown into a special blend of blues, folk and gospel, drawing comparisons to Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin.

Foster has been recognized three times as the Austin Music Award Best Female Vocalist, most recently in 2013. Additionally, she has been recognized at the Blues Music Awards and Living Blues Awards, winning the 2010 Critic's Poll Winner. She has toured and recorded with Warren Haynes, performed with Susan Tedeschi and sang on the hit TV series Revolution.

The Heritage Blues Orchestra honors the traditional fare in a way that brings new life to old music. From the raw, a cappella prison gang grunts of "Go Down Hannah" to the slide guitar-fueled gospel stomp swamp version of "Get Right Church" and Son House's Delta blues classic "Clarksdale Moan," this group is breathtakingly new even as they honor old African-American musical traditions.
