Grammy-nominated trombonist Papo Vazquez blends some of the best sounds of Afro-Caribbean jazz, producing what the New York Times has called music with "jolting energy." Beginning his career at church dances in Philadelphia and in a local salsa band, Papo became interested in jazz at a young age. Over the years, he has frequently been included in lists of underappreciated artists. However, his work has garnered recognition numerous awards. In 2010, Vazquez was the first person to receive a commission for the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, one of the resident bands of "Jazz at Lincoln Center." Downbeat magazine, reviewing his most recent album, Oasis, contends that Papo has "an unbridled lust for life matched by an unmatched ear for moving music."
