Ceramicist Michael Lucero began developing a body of larger-than-life figures as a graduate student. When he moved to New York City in 1978 he didn’t have access to a kiln and instead constructed a series of 17 hanging figures from fruit crates scavenged in the East Village. All 17 figures will be shown together in Michael Lucero Installation. Also included will be contemporary drawings by the artist prepared specifically for this exhibition. These wood works have only been exhibited once, at the Wake Forest University Art Gallery in Winston Salem, North Carolina, in 1980. The works are lent by Stephen and Pamela Hootkin, the Portland Museum of Art, Maine, and the Montclair Art Museum. Preview reception and artist talk: Thursday, May 9 (5pm Artist Michael Lucero will discuss his work; 6–8pm Preview reception with music by flutist Peter Phippen and multi-instrumentalist Enrique Rueda, plus refreshments and a cash bar.)
