SPECTATE v. PARTICIPATE

6 ways to weather winter

If you’ve spent any amount of time in Wisconsin, you know it’s around this time of year when the snowy season loses a bit of its … sparkle. Whether your inclination is to hibernate or to embrace the flakes all the way to the finish line, we’ve put together a list of ways to weather this winter:

Need for Speed

SPECTATE:
Speedskating The U.S. Speedskating Short Track Championships are back for their second straight year at Verona Ice Arena. This fast-paced event has been described as “NASCAR on Ice” and features top speed skaters from around the nation who may be Olympic stars of tomorrow.

vs.

PARTICIPATE:
Ice Skating - Tenney Park The City of Madison has many picturesque parks where you can glide the day away! Elver, Tenney and Vilas parks all have skate rentals, warming houses and concessions.

A New Twist

SPECTATE:
2015 Dairy-Aire Gymnastics Invitational Athleticism, character and sportsmanship all meet in Madison at two key gymnastics tournaments: the Dairy-Aire Invitational and the Wisconsin State Gymnastics Championships. Both events are your chance to watch Gymfinity-trained gymnasts from across the Midwest.

vs.

PARTICIPATE:
Rockin Jump Practice your own jump, tuck and pike skills at Rockin’ Jump Trampoline Park, where you can jump my way through 30,000+ square feet of space, play trampoline dodge ball or basketball.

Rolling & Reeling

SPECTATE:
Mad Rollin If you’ve never seen the Mad Rollin’ Dolls do derby, it’s a don’t-miss, spectator sport held in the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center. Billed as a combination of adrenaline and estrogen, mascara and mayhem, watching this full-contact, sassy sport is sure to add a little spark to your season.

vs.

PARTICIPATE:
Ice Fishing on the Lakes Frozen lakes never stopped us from fishing, and the Wisconsin Fishing Expo—also at the Alliant Energy Center—is THE place for fishing enthusiasts for any season. Whether you test-drive rods and reels, plan the expedition of a lifetime or buy a new boat, it’s a great way to “get away” this winter!
