Black Star Drum Line provides youth in the Madison community with an opportunity for creative expression through the percussive arts. Director Joey B. Banks founded the program in 2008 with the core elements of diversity, unity, mastery, respect for self and others. The group has completed over 650 shows in Wisconsin and the Madison community, collaborating with local groups and performers such as The Handphibians, Rob Dz, Keon Andre, Pretty Boy Hefner, Lucas Koehler, Jeff Weiss, Stefan Truesdell, Gabe Burdulis, Xavi Lynn, Anthony Lamarr, Bradley Thomas(DLO ), A.N.T, XL Big, Protege’, Trilogy and The Mascot Theory.
In 2018 Black Star Drum Line was awarded the Madison Area Music Association Award for “Best Youth Band”. In 2017 they competed at the DCIWorld Championships, became the first junior drumline in the NBA as the Milwaukee Bucks “Mini Beats” and opened for the national touring act Drumline at Overture Hall. They are now a partner with Forward Performing Arts (formerly, the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps Association) which allows more youth from the Madison area to be involved with Black Star Drum Line and other percussive arts. Past performance highlights are playing for 25,000 people at Lifest in 2012, opening for Rapper B.O.B. at a UW-Whitewater “Welcoming” event in 2014, standing room only performances at Overture Center “Kids In The Rotunda” the last 5 years, and performances at the World’s Largest Music Festival, Milwaukee’s Summerfest. We hope you enjoy our performance and learn what it is like to be in a drumline. Maybe someday you will join Black Star Drum Line for our “Teach Me How To Drumline” performance.
