Gabrielle Hecht's talk examines mine waste in South Africa, suggesting that African Anthropocenes prefigure planetary futures. These futures are configured by residual governance: governance of residues, governance as afterthought, and governance that makes people and places residual.

Gabrielle Hecht is Frank Stanton Foundation Professor of Nuclear Security at Stanford University, where she is affiliated with the Department of History and the Center for International Security and Cooperation.
