Artist reception for the second exhibition in the Graduate Madison's Local Art Series featuring Leigh Garcia. There will complimentary food and beverage as well as an artist talk at 5:15 PM.
More about the exhibition:
Throughout the first floor of the Graduate, you will find artwork by J. Leigh Garcia. The seventh-generation Texan of European and Mexican descent recently earned an MFA from UW-Madison, where her artistic practice was shaped by the roots of her ancestry. The complex relationship within her cultural identity stems from major events in Texas history including the Mexican-American War, Battle of the Alamo, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and Bracero Program. Residual racial discord, such as the racialization and displacement of Latinx immigrants, is both the context and focus of Garcia’s work. Her printmaking, papermaking, and installation art encourage awareness of current immigration and foreign affairs issues by confronting viewers with border realities.
Exhibition is on view June 18 - July 30, 2018.
- Times: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
