Rooftop Cinema returns to the museum’s rooftop sculpture garden each Friday this June for its thirteenth season. This year Rooftop Cinema contemplates what a long, strange tyip it has been in the fifty years since 1968, and also showcases recent experimental works and hybrid documentaries.
Groundbreaking experimental film distributor Canyon Cinema, based in San Francisco, celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2017. Curator David Dinnell, visiting faculty at California Institute of the Arts, has assembled a program exploring the depth and breadth of the Canyon Cinema catalog. Featured filmmakers include Bruce Baillie, Chick Strand, Barbara Hammer, Scott Stark, and Janie Geiser.
Films begin at sundown, approximately 9:30 pm. Rooftop Cinema is free for MMoCA members / $7 for non-members; admission begins at the lobby reception desk one hour before screen time. Screenings relocate to the lecture hall is rain is predicted.
