Science to Street Art murals will demonstrate a variety of ways that creative placemaking and public art can be crafted to amplify science and educational resources within the City of Madison. WID has initiated a unique partnership between the Madison Arts Commission (MAC), Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), and community stakeholders to support and celebrate the innovative creation of street art that fuses science, art, and story.

Science to Street Art is an initiative pairing street artists with UW-Madison scientists to create graffiti science themed educational murals throughout the city of Madison during the Fall of 2019. The aim is to provide non-traditional avenues for science literacy through the fusion of science and art. Mural locations prioritize underserved neighborhoods to re-energize community places, and encourage exploring the outdoors – with an emphasis on science.

The project consists of two parts. First, public art will be commissioned, designed and painted by local artists and scientists. Second, a festival will feature workshops fusing the art to science-based curriculum. The festival will include free outdoor science and street art activities.
