#TreatYoself: An itinerary For a Fabulous Bonus Day

As a mom to a toddler, I rarely take time to pamper myself. With a Bonus Day, I’d surely “leap” on taking a day all to myself to do some of my favorite things.

8:45 a.m. My first stop would be Marigold Kitchen for breakfast. This sunny, cheery café sits right off of the Square and is a cozy favorite to settle in for locally-sourced breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes. With choices like duck confit hash, chilaquiles and a chorizo sausage, cheddar, cilantro and sweet corn relish omelet, I’d have a tough time just choosing just one option!

9:45 a.m. I’d venture over to Colectivo Coffee on the Square to take a moment to catch up on the news or read a magazine (toddlers unfortunately do not understand the meaning of “Mommy’s reading…”). I love the intellectual, energizing atmosphere of this Wisconsin purveyor of joe.

10:45 a.m. After, I’d take a leisurely walk downtown to take in the sights and sounds of our vibrant city and head over to The Edgewater Spa for a massage and pedicure. The Spa has a gorgeous view of Lake Mendota and is a refreshing way to take a moment for yourself and soak in vistas of the serene waters.

12:45 p.m. Lunchtime! With so many choices downtown, it would be tough to choose just one, but Graze’s mac and cheese or The Coopers Tavern’s sweet potato chili would be a perfect comfort food lunch dish for this chilly time of year.

2 p.m. I love the peace and tranquility of museums, so a trip to the Chazen Museum of Art would be in order. Seeing as they have works by John Steuart Curry and Frida Kahlo plus a wonderful exhibition of the UW Art Department’s faculty work on display right now, it would be an inspirational, thought-provoking trip.

4 p.m. By then it would be happy hour and Madison has no shortage of fantastic cocktail bars. Perhaps I’d head over to Sardine with my husband and friends and sip on a glass of wine, or march over to Merchant for a craft cocktail of the highest standards.

6 p.m. Dinner can also be a quandary because there are so many great choices (again)! Rare Steakhouse would be a lovely indulgence. Or if I’m in a seafood mood Tempest Oyster Bar would be a tasty end to the day.

8 p.m. A perfect nightcap would be to have a nightcap at Gib’s Bar on Williamson Street. This little hideaway (next door to Grampa’s Pizzeria, owned by the same family) specializes in cocktails. It’s got an inviting living room feel and intimate seating for a wonderful end to a great bonus day. #Treatyoself, indeed.
