Just minutes from downtown Madison, the Heritage Center invites visitors of all ages to connect with nature through hands-on programs and outdoor exploration. Surrounded by prairie, marsh, and oak savanna, the Center is a hub for environmental education, recreation, and community gatherings. The Center hosts family-friendly events throughout the year that engage you in nature, wildlife, and the changing seasons. Visitors can also take part in “learn to” programs that teach skills like camping, snowshoeing, or geocaching—perfect for anyone eager to try something new outdoors. Educational offerings include Nature in Session, which brings engaging environmental lessons to schools and community groups across Dane County, and field trips that immerse students in hands-on discovery at a Dane County Park. Each summer, kids can explore the outdoors through Junior Naturalist Camp, gaining a deeper appreciation for local ecosystems through play and exploration. Accessibility is at the heart of the Center’s mission. Visitors with mobility challenges can experience the trails and scenic natural areas using an all-terrain wheelchair, available seasonally for public use and educational programs.
