OVERVIEW
There are many ways we respond to artwork. Sometimes we have a physical reaction: a tear, laughter, a grimace. Sometimes we ask questions: What does it mean? How did the artist do this? Why would they make this?
Poetry inspired by art (a painting, a drawing, a movie) is known as ekphrastic poetry.
In this 5 week workshop, we will delve into the world of ekphrasis. As a class, we will look at a number of ekphrastic poets, as well as take field trips to surrounding art galleries, where we will engage with prompts inspired by current art shows. The course will culminate in a poetry reading, a showcase of all the wonderful words we’ve written over the course of the class!
Week 1: Intro to Ekphrasis
Week 2: Ekphrasis at the Art Lit Lab
Week 3: Ekphrasis at the Chazen Gallery
Week 4: Ekphrasis at Commonwealth Gallery/ MATC -- class choice!
Week 5: Ekphrasis Reading open to the public
