Writing the Braided Essay

111. S. Livingston St. Suite 100
Madison, WI 53703
OVERVIEW

A braided essay is a powerful form of creative nonfiction that intertwines two or more distinct narratives or thematic threads to create a cohesive, multi-layered whole. Like a literal braid, these "strands" appear and reappear throughout the essay, building resonance and revealing deeper meanings through their interplay.

In this generative workshop, we'll explore what makes a braided essay work and how the form can hold complexity, contradiction, and discovery. Through readings, guided prompts, and discussion, we’ll experiment with our own braids: blending personal stories with other threads.

Taught in an inclusive, welcoming environment, this workshop is designed to support risk-taking, reflection, and connection.'
