IRONMAN® Wisconsin happens only once a year. But if you’re in Madison, there’s a way to feel like a triathlete any day.  Check out these suggestions if you’ve ever wanted to train like an IRONMAN!

Swim it to win it!

Train in the same waters as IRONMAN athletes! Lake Monona is a great sunrise location before the boat traffic puts in. Start your dip at Law Park, which is located just off John Nolen Drive by Machinery Row Bicycles and is the entry point for IRONMAN Wisconsin triathletes on race day. As you look up to take a breath, use the iconic Monona Terrace® Community and Convention Center to help guide you. The official 2.4 mile swim course is one big loop, but you can decide how far you go before drying off.

If big water isn’t your thing, try the nine-acre pond at Verona’s Fireman’s Park. This calmer body of water is great throughout the day for swimmers of all levels—though you’ll likely see some professionals there training for the IRONMAN year-round. Regardless of where you go, make all your swims more enjoyable and safe by swimming with a partner or group.

Pedal to the metal

IRONMAN Wisconsin’s 112-mile bike course is considered one of the most unrelenting of all IRONMAN races. But there are plenty of ways to make this ride a cruise and not a curse. Rolling hills throughout the Dane County countryside make for great challenges but also amazing views. Want a break from the bike seat? Stop in the Village of Mount Horeb for a bite or in Verona at Wisconsin Brewing Company, which features a huge, relaxing outdoor patio. They even have bike racks!

Running around town

Just like the real race, which ends with a 26.2-mile run, you can start your own route with a jog up State Street and around the Capitol Square in the morning before businesses open. (You’ll feel like you have the city all to yourself!) For an energy boost, lace up for the same run during the evening and feel the vibe from all of the outdoor cafés, entertainers and an illuminated State Capitol Building!
