Q&A with Stephanie Hauser
Executive Director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association
What aspects of your role as executive director feel most rewarding when you see thousands of student-athletes come together for state tournaments?
The most rewarding part isn’t draping the medals and presenting the trophy; it’s watching students realize a dream. When you watch tens of thousands of student-athletes compete on the biggest stage, you’re seeing years of early mornings, bus rides and sacrifices culminate in one moment. There’s a special energy, a mix of nervous intensity, pure joy and wholesome sportsmanship, that fills the air. Seeing a student-athlete realize that they belong on this stage, regardless of the final score, is why we do what we do.
Madison has been home to many WIAA State Championships for decades. What qualities make the city such a strong and reliable partner for these events?
Madison isn’t just a host; it’s a destination that understands the gravity of the moment for so many. Between State Street and the iconic venues like the Kohl Center or Camp Randall, the city provides a championship feel that students remember for the rest of their lives. Madison has the ability to absorb thousands of visitors while still making teams feel like the center of attention. The little things, such as a community welcome sign in a hotel lobby or a welcome gift for teams, are gestures that mean so much. This is a sports town that respects and enjoys all aspects of athletic events, especially major ones like WIAA State Championships.
What do you hear from current and former student-athletes that have competed at state in Madison?
The common thread is always nostalgia. The athletes who have participated in these events talk about the 'walk to the floor,' the sea of their school colors in the stands, the pep band playing as they run out for warm-ups and the connection they felt with their teammates and coaches. National statistics show that approximately 97 percent of high school athletes will not compete beyond high school so, for most, competing in a state championship is a highlight of their young lives.
Education-based athletics continues to thrive. What makes it so important to communities and student-athletes?
Unlike club or professional sports, education-based athletics is an extension of the classroom. It’s the WIAA’s opportunity to realize its vision: Inspiring Champions for Life.
- For the athletes, it teaches resilience, time management and how to win and lose with grace.
- For the communities, these teams wear the school and community name on their jersey. They provide a sense of identity and a common ground where neighbors can come together to cheer for something bigger than themselves. In a world that can feel fragmented, high school sports are a powerful unifier.
Why should casual fans come to the state tournament?
You don’t need a team from your community among the qualified field to appreciate the raw, unscripted drama of a WIAA State Tournament. This is 'the high school Big Dance.’ Not only will you see a level of hustle and heart that is rare, but the event is meant to entertain all in attendance. Whether it's the incredible half-time performances, the school spirit or the sheer talent on display, it’s some of the best entertainment value in the state. Come for the game, stay for the spirit and the wholesomeness of education-based athletics.
Q&A with Jamie Patrick
Executive Vice President of Sales & Sports Strategy at Destination Madison
What makes Madison uniquely positioned to host major statewide events like the WIAA championships from a sports tourism and economic development standpoint?
Madison serving as the state capital makes it a special place because of the significance of the location here. However, all states have a state capital, but aren’t positioned to host like Madison. In addition to that unique connectivity, Madison has the infrastructure to host large events: top venues, lodging, restaurants and more. In addition, Madison is a really safe and thriving city. It is the type of place you would be okay sending your high schooler to and letting them wander State Street. Finally, we have people who really care about education and also care about sports. As a result, they want to help out, volunteer and ensure there is a platform for students to achieve great things. They get a lot of joy in supporting the state tournaments.
The WIAA has been a long-standing partner for Madison. What makes that relationship work so well?
The University of Wisconsin–Madison wants to welcome people to experience the campus and our team wants to authentically provide core experiences for the state to come to Madison. Through helping to remove logistical roadblocks or figuring out a new way to welcome people, we are both in it to help create as good of an experience as we can. Plus, Madison is a tradition that doesn’t lose its appeal.
