Twinkling lights. Holiday-themed cocktails. Nostalgic decorations down to the very last detail. It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season in Madison, and local eateries are getting in the spirit with pop-up dining experiences straight out of a Christmas card.
Whether you're a local with a love for all things festive, or a visitor planning the merriest Madison getaway EVER, these candy cane and tinsel-clad stops are musts for any holiday itinerary.
Dine in decked halls at Lucille
If you've never been to Lucille's Miracle on King Street celebration, just trust us, it's something special. In 2026, the celebration will run from November 23 to December 24, and word on the street is there's a dinosaur mug with your name on it.
The Miracle on King specialty cocktail menu is available daily offering festive and delicious drink choices. Cocktails like Elfing Around (prosecco, gin and mulled wine paired with grapefruit, orange and bitters) and Christmapolitan (a holiday twist on a cosmopolitan) provide fun, unique flavors alongside more traditional winter vibes like a Snowball Old Fashioned or hot buttered rum. Some drinks are even served in fun glassware, like the iconic dinosaur mug we mentioned. Pro tip: you can purchase these festive cups to take home, and they make GREAT stocking stuffers.
Enjoy the festive drinks alongside Lucille’s delicious menu offerings. Known for their wood-fired and steel pan pizzas, Lucille also has cheese curds—served with ranch and marinara, trust us on this one—, tacos and seasonal flavors to ensure a holly jolly holiday season.
Holiday fun with a twist at Merchant
If a dark and whimsical themed Christmas celebration is more up your alley, head down the street to Lucille's sister restaurant for Merchant's Christmas Nightmare.
From November 27 through December 27, 2026, Merchant will transform its downtown bar into an immersive and twisted winter wonderland with moody lighting, Tim Burton-style decor and a cocktail menu that'll have you immersed in the world of the beloved film, The Nightmare Before Christmas!
The Christmas Nightmare Cocktail Menu is anything but ordinary with drinks like the Two-Face Nog (a dramatic, color-shifting dairy free milk nog with apple brandy, vanilla, maple and spice), Spirit of Sandy Claws (butter-raspberry vodka sour with cardamom bitters and a spiral candy garnish) and other nightmare-ishly tasty craft cocktails. Each drink is a tribute to the films characters and aesthetics—playful, theatrical and deeply flavorful.
A night that sparkles at The Boathouse
Dinner with a view is one thing. Dinner surrounded by twinkling holiday lights while looking out over a frozen lake is a whole other thing. That's what's in store as you sit down for a meal at The Boathouse, The Edgewater Hotel's waterfront pub, this holiday season.
Each year, The Edgewater Elves take a break from gift wrapping to transform The Boathouse into a cozy, colorful wonderland. Beginning November 18, 2026, and continuing through January 24, 2027, swing by and experience the wonder of the season from the shores of Lake Mendota.
In addition to festive cocktails and comfort food, this highly anticipated annual event will also feature holiday trivia nights and movie screenings, karaoke—featuring your favorite holiday hits, of course—, board games, bingo, curling matches and more. Bring your family or invite your friends for an "oh, what fun!" kind of evening that might just have you breaking into Christmas carols.
Nostalgia meets holiday cheer at Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge
Though relatively new to the Madison scene—they're celebrating three years in business in November!—, Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge has already established their annual holiday overlay as a local favorite. Deck the Strip Mall, Lola's vintage holiday celebration, is a wonderfully quirky take on the holiday seasons of way back when.
Lola's often hosts vinyl listening nights, and the holiday season is no exception. As part of their nostalgic holiday pop-up, you'll catch classic tunes from the likes of the Vince Guaraldi Trio (of Charlie Brown fame) and Ella Fitzgerald. Swing by for ambiance that's music to your ears, and a holiday menu that's good for the soul.
For a dining experience bursting with festive flair, you won't want to skip Lola's during the month of December. Official dates for the 2026 celebration have not yet been released, so keep an eye on their website for updates as the season draws nearer.
More things to do this season
Where you dine is only one piece of the holiday puzzle, but don't worry, Madison has got more where that came from. Here are more things to do in and around the city this season, from Christkindlmarket shopping to lakeside ice skating.
Shopping
Let's face it, trying to find the perfect gift for your loved ones can get a little stressful. Luckily, Madison is one of those places where you'll never run out of options, no matter what type of gift you're looking for. A great place to start is our impressive pop-up Christkindlmarket lineup, and in 2026, markets will be hosted in three different Greater Madison communities (Paoli, New Glarus and Verona), spanning four total weekends. Go for the mulled wine, holiday spirit and endless selection of handmade and locally sourced gifts.
Outdoor Adventure
If you're looking for ways to bundle up and get active while you're in town, look no further than The Edgewater Hotel. During the summer, the space hosts weddings, live music and other events. When winter rolls around, it transforms into The Icehouse, a stunning ice rink overlooking Lake Mendota and the picturesque ice skating experience of your dreams. The rink opens up in December each year and is the perfect way to work up an appetite for your nearby Lights on the Lake reservation at The Boathouse.
Holiday Lights
We've said it before and will definitely say it again: the holidays in Madison are magic. And while the Henry Vilas Zoo may be a year-round source of entertainment, its magic shines especially bright during the holidays. One of Madison's most famous holiday light shows and displays, Zoo Lights, invites attendees to roam the zoo grounds after hours, taking in the beauty of over 1 million multi-colored holiday lights. With the price of admission, you'll also receive photos with Santa and unlimited carousel rides.
