As a former Chicagoan who relocated to Madison in 2023, I’ve had the vantage point of living, working and commuting in both cities. During the relocation, I continued to work at MxD where we hosted member summits, industry roundtables and receptions, plus operated a 94,000‑square‑foot event space on Goose Island serving corporate, nonprofit, government and academic groups.

After 15+ years in Chicago, I can clearly see how Chicago area associations and organizations can benefit from hosting their events in Madison.

Here’s why:

  1. Close to Chicago, but offers fresh attendee experiences
  2. Cost savings of Madison vs. Chicago
  3. Easy transportation and less stress
  4. An abundance of free, local attractions
  5. Natural beauty and green space to recharge

1. Close to Chicago, but offers fresh attendee experiences

Before visiting Madison, I only had a vague sense of where it was on the map. My Wisconsin landmarks were the Northwoods, Milwaukee and a handful of state parks that allowed a reprieve from hectic city life. I had mostly heard of Madison through colleagues and friends of friends who attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

When I realized that Madison was just two to two and a half hours northwest on I-90, I booked a weekend trip to scope it out. What I found surprised me. I discovered a lakeside city with urban amenities, a lively farmers’ market wrapped around the stately Capitol building, neighborhoods filled with character, community gardens and some of the best bike trails I’ve experienced.

Your Chicago attendees will feel that same sense of discovery. A simple one-hour flight or two- to two-and-a-half-hour drive transports you to a capital city with its own rhythm, distinct from other Midwest destinations like Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis.

In our downtown, you won’t find many chain restaurants. Locally owned restaurants, coffee shops and indie boutiques rule here. Farm-to-table dining isn’t a trend—it’s simply how our chefs operate, sourcing seasonal, high-quality ingredients from the region’s many farmers and producers. Madison doesn’t sit in the shadow of nearby larger metros; instead, it holds an identity of its own as a progressive capital with a premier research university at its core.

Host your event in Madison and give attendees what they want: new experiences outside the usual destinations, convenience and a sense of place they’ll want to return to with family and friends.

2. Cost savings of Madison vs. Chicago

Aggregate data from Apartments.com shows that Chicago’s overall cost of living is 13.3% higher than Madison's. I’ve felt the cost savings on my day-to-day expenses in Madison, and you’ll feel the positive effects on your group’s travel spend.

Coffee at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center is less than $48 a gallon. Yes, really. Those savings extend across other budget lines as well.

Compared to Chicago and other major metros, Madison offers a cost‑effective experience without sacrificing accessibility and urban amenities. Lower sales tax, group dining, catering, A/V, room setup and transportation between venues all contribute to meaningful savings.

Chicago planners are often surprised to find that Madison offers the following:

3. Easy transportation and less stress

I remember sweltering afternoon walks to the CTA Blue Line to catch a flight out of O’Hare and flagging $60 rideshares, praying I wouldn’t hit westbound rush-hour traffic. Those days are behind me.

In Madison, it takes less than 15 minutes to drive from the airport to downtown. Security lines are significantly shorter and the travel experience is far less stressful. Rideshares are easy to find, and the city has a fantastic bus rapid transit system that is clean, accessible, convenient and fast.

A friend of mine from Chicago visited recently and noted how nice it was that there were no major highways cutting through the downtown isthmus. It hadn’t occurred to me, but the compact layout of our lake-city-lake landscape truly does make the city walkable, accessible and peaceful. Your attendees will spend less time navigating traffic and more time exploring the restaurants, culture and outdoor adventure Madison has to offer.

4. An abundance of free, local attractions

Madison offers an exceptional lineup of free experiences:

Several standout museums—including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chazen Museum of Art, and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum—also offer free admission, making it easy for visitors to immerse themselves in local arts and history.

This helps planners stretch budgets while still offering memorable attendee experiences. Discover even more free things to do in Madison here.

5. Natural beauty and green space to recharge

Reflecting on my first visit to Madison, I remember how verdant the city was. How refreshing and new everything felt. Madison is a beautiful city filled with inspiration for all to enjoy. It has five picturesque lakes, safe outdoor trails and the highest number of parks per capita in the nation. The city has deep roots in pioneering sustainability and it shows in its infrastructure, venues and values. Your attendees will appreciate the change of scenery and the chance to recharge.

Chicago will always have my heart—it’s an amazing city with incredible people. But for now, Madison is the refreshing change of pace I need. There is, however, one comparison I’ll never budge on: when it comes to pizza, there’s no place like home.
