Here’s the thing about Madison and Pride: we don’t just show up for one weekend in June and call it a day. In Madison, we celebrate who we are all year long and, when August rolls around, we bring it all together in one extraordinary weekend that reminds you why this city is one of the most welcoming places in the country.

As someone who lives and works here and has deep roots in this community, I can tell you with full confidence: you belong in Madison on Pride Weekend. Whether you’re an LGBTQ+ traveler visiting for the first time, a local who’s been here for years, or someone bringing family or friends along to experience it all. There is a place for you here.

Why Madison for Pride?

Madison’s LGBTQ+ history isn’t just a footnote; it’s woven into the city’s identity. This is the city that launched the political career of Tammy Baldwin, who became the nation’s first openly lesbian congresswoman. This is the city that passed one of the earliest LGBT rights protections in the country. And this is the city where Pride has been a community gathering since the late 1980s, when thousands marched together on the Capitol steps.

We celebrate in August intentionally, a choice made decades ago so Madison’s event could stand on its own, separate from the big June celebrations in Chicago and Minneapolis. That decision turned into something beautiful: a Pride that feels distinctly ours, unhurried and deeply rooted in this community.

Madison is consistently recognized as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the Midwest, and you’ll feel that the moment you arrive. This is a place where you can be who you want to be and express yourself however you choose. And what makes that even more powerful is being surrounded by thousands of other people doing the exact same thing.

The Main Event: OutReach Magic Pride Festival

The crown jewel of Pride Weekend is the OutReach Magic Pride Festival; a free celebration from 1–6 p.m. at Warner Park on Madison’s north side, organized by OutReach LGBT Community Center.

The festival’s name carries real history. MAGIC stands for Madison Area Gay Interim Committee, a nod to the beloved MAGIC Picnic that was a Madison institution for decades. Today’s festival honors that legacy while building something new: a vibrant, diverse, inclusive celebration that truly reflects the whole community.

This is one of the things I love most about Pride in Madison: people of all ages, genders and walks of life find a home here. It’s not just a party; it’s a community gathering. Families with kids, seniors, college students, first-timers and lifelong Madisonians all share the same space and the same joy.

Insider Tips

  • Arrive early to snag a great spot near the main stage and browse vendors before the crowds peak.
  • Wear your colors. This is absolutely a day to express yourself through fashion, flags and fun.
  • Sunscreen is your best friend; Warner Park is a beautiful outdoor venue, but August in Wisconsin is no joke.
  • Don’t miss the community booths; some of the most meaningful connections happen when you stop and talk to local organizations doing incredible work.

A Local’s Take

I’ve been to a lot of Pride events over the years and what keeps drawing me back to Madison’s is how real it feels. This isn’t a corporate spectacle; it’s a community celebration. When you walk through Warner Park on festival day, you see neighbors, friends, families and strangers from across the Midwest, all occupying the same joyful space.

Madison celebrates Pride all year: in its bars, its businesses, its neighborhoods, its politics. The August festival is just the moment when all of that energy comes together in one place. If you’ve never experienced it, this is the weekend to come.

See you at Warner Park.
