What should I know before I visit Madison?

Madison is a come-as-you-are type of city. It's a place where you can be bold or blend in. We don't judge.

The weather in Madison is nearly identical to Chicago's at any given time (minus those gusty Lake Michigan winds). To help you prepare, we've put together a recommended packing list to guide the way.

Madison packing list

  • Walking shoes: The city is incredibly walkable, not to mention the 270+ miles of trails you can hike or bike on.
  • Tote bag: Sustainability is a priority in Madison. Local shops love to see you BYOB (bag that is). And it's a must-have accessory for the Dane County Farmers' Market.
  • Swimsuit or water-safe clothing: You might not think you'll get in the water, but those sparkling lakes are SO TEMPTING once you see them. Plus, you don't need to bring your own equipment, thanks to convenient boat rentals on lakes Monona, Mendota and Wingra.
  • Reusable water bottle: Again, sustainability! Many of our attractions and public spaces have convenient fill stations.
  • Bike helmet: Madison is a famously bikeable city with rentable e-bikes scattered all across town.
  • Lactaid: For our lactose-intolerant friends who cannot resist an artisanal cheese board or milkshake.
